Courses

Scholars take special courses for unit credit, such as "Flourishing in STEM", which focus on topics like productive struggle, teaching and essential skills for success in college and beyond.

Flourishing in STEM

Through a collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Research, the AnchorSTEM leadership team created a course for incoming scholars to aid them in the transition to college. The “Flourishing in STEM” course developed a supportive learning community to provide incoming scholars with the necessary skills and research experience before and during their first year of college.

Incoming scholars learned to use reflection to develop their metacognitive skills. Skills taught included how to be a brave learner, develop the habit of asking questions, and accept mistakes as growth opportunities. They were encouraged to find an interest in and a willingness to learn new things that may seem out of reach. The course also focused on the development of learning skills necessary for success in STEM like time management, enhancing transferable problem-solving skills, effective note-taking, and understanding academic readings.
