Community Building
The team selected the fourth cohort of nine AnchorSTEM scholars, most first generation college students, to get all their financial need met at USD and participate in mentoring, research, and other community-building activities. The new scholars engaged in a 7-week summer experience designed to prepare them for academic and personal success with community/campus engagement, leadership opportunities, research opportunities, workshops for academic and personal development, and other enriching experiences, which included research, community-building, a ropes course, a trip to the Tijuana River Estuary led by a blind guide, mental and emotional health first aid, preparation for college, and final presentations.
They also prepared and led a scavenger hunt for high school students from Ocean Discovery Institute and a workshop “Enjoying Nature in the Dark” at the STEAM Youth and Community Conference.
13 AnchorSTEM scholars were selected to participate in the 2024 S-STEM Scholars & PI Meeting, November 8-10, 2024. The team is presenting a workshop at that meeting entitled “Mastering Tough Scenarios: Role-playing for Effective Solutions.”
The team submitted a book chapter entitled “Building Cultural Wealth for First-Generation College Students in STEM Using a Cohort Model” to be published in a book called Best Practices in Teaching, Mentoring, and Engaging First-Generation College Students.
