COMMUNITY
in STEM
AnchorSTEM will develop a one-unit course based on the institutional needs identified by USD’s Student Success Report, lessons learned from our prior S-STEM Projects, and developed with the students’ needs and interests in mind.
The content will be challenging by design, allowing the faculty members teaching the course to help the students start to think about how they will react to the inevitable challenges of college with confidence, self-efficacy, and strength.
A course that prepares students to augment their STEM learning with design thinking tools, techniques, and mindsets to facilitate desired and useful contributions to their communities.
Seeing the connection between changemaking and STEM will help motivate students’ sense of dedication to a STEM career and their self-efficacy.
The project is centered on a democratic, mutually-beneficial, and equitable collaboration between USD and community partners that aims to benefit the students, the community and the university, and to advance understanding of how this community-based approach, including meaningful community engagement, affects the students’ persistence and success in STEM.
